Construction of 5 Evaporation Ponds - Kemapco Package 5 Project, Aqaba, Jordan

Kemapco Package 5 Project is owned by a joint venture between Kemira, a company from Finland and Arab Potash Company, which is owned by the Jordanian Government. The site is situated approximately 30 km south of Aqaba city and is located near the Jordan-Saudi Arabia border. The project, comprising five effluent ponds and a solid waste landfill is part of a process plant for potassium nitrate and di-calcium phosphate.

The consultant and designer for the project was Dar Al-Handasah, with headquarters in Lebanon and with offices throughout the Middle East and Europe.

Installation of the HDPE Geomembrane Liners was carried out by Arabian Environmental Construction Company  (AEC), Knight Piesold (Pty) Ltd - South Africa, was responsible for Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) for the installation of the HDPE Geomembrane and the scope of work included monitoring and reporting on the installation of the Geomembranes as well as co-signing the quality assurance certificates provided by AEC.

The key features of the project included the following:

  • Earthworks and embankment construction for 5 effluent ponds and a solid waste landfill site.

  • Installation and testing of a total of 565,000m of HDPE Geomembrane linings.

  • Conducting of leak location survey for the HDPE Geomembrane liner.

  • Compilation of a CQA plan in accordance with international standards (IAGI).

  • On-site supervision and CQA monitoring.

  • CQA material testing monitoring and verification.

  • Monitoring and supervision of leak location survey.

  • CQA completion report.
