New Doha International Airport – Construction of Engineered Landfill at Mesiaeed, Qatar

The Government of the State of Qatar is currently constructing a new international airport for Doha-Qatar, part of the project is to construct a new engineered landfill


The engineers and administrators for the project were Overseas Bechtel International. Supply of Geosynthetic Lining System and testing of the lining system was carried out by Arabian Environmental Construction Company (AEC). Envitech Consulting (Pty) Ltd – South Africa, was responsible for Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) for the installation of the liner materials and their scope of work included monitoring and reporting on the installation of HDPE Geomembrane, Non-woven Geotextile and leachate collection system as well as co-signing the quality assurance certificates provided by the contracting company.
The key features of the project included the following:
- Earthworks construction for the new engineered waste landfill site and backfilling of operational/drainage layers.
- Installation & quality control testing of a total of 840,000m²of HDPE Geomembrane, Geosynthetic Clayy Liner, Geotextile protection layers and leachate collection system.
- Compilation of a CQA plan in accordance with international standards (IAGI).
- On-site supervision and CQA monitoring.
- CQA material testing – monitoring and verification.
- Monitoring and supervision of leak location survey.
- CQA completion report.
